All the fountains in Istanbul don’t have the same characteristics. We can analyse fountains according to their characteristics as follows:

1) Fountains on walls: These are fountains that have one of their sides on walls or which lean their backs on constructions or walls.

2) Fountains on the corners of streets: They are on corners of streets or buildings.

3)Fountains in squares: These are the fountains in squares. The fountains Ottomans constructed in outdoor areas with the western effect at the beginning of the 18th century are examples of these. They generally have four sides.

4) Fountains for Prayers (Namazgah): These are the fountains that were built in certain places on intercity, long distance ways where generally passengers and groups of passengers (kervan) stayed.

5) Ornamental fountains /springs (selsebiller): These are the fountains that were built in the gardens of villas for decoration

6) Kiosks (sebiller): These are fountains that were built for delivering sherbet or juice for charity. They were generally built together with their charity buildings.

7) Column Fountains: These kind of fountains can be seen in the mosque gardens and ports.
