Parents of our students in the kindergarten (Age 6) gathered together with our English teachers at the “Parents’ ELT (English Language Teaching) Day”. The presentation took place on Saturday, October 5 at our Levent Campus and on Friday, October 11 at our Tepeören Campus.
Our teachers informed our parents about the process of developing foreign language skills with the awareness that it is crucial to make use of times outside the schooltime besides the curricula being implemented in our school for the development of our students’ English skills. Moreover, they gave examples of activities that could support development of our students’ language skills at home and shared some practical tips.
Our teachers who talked about how language acquisition happens and progresses in younger groups highlighted the positive impact of the support provided by the parents throughout the process on students’ language skills.
They emphasized the importance of learning a foreign language by enjoying themselves and having fun at early ages and explained the impact of time assigned to foreign language at home on the process of learning a language. They talked about the benefits of using elements of English language frequently at home. They stated that students can read books in English that are age-appropriate and match their interest through dramatization and that they can carry out a variety of activities using those books.
In addition to these, they expressed that making listening to songs in English a daily routine could have a positive impact on learning English. They stated that it would be crucial to do frequent repetitive exercises, set daily routines with kids, study consistently, and play games for learning English.
Moreover, they gave concrete examples of the difference providing motivational and positive feedback makes on students in terms of transferring foreign language skills to daily life. Our teachers also employed vocabulary, songs, and short stories in Spanish as they carried out activities they use in English classes and taught by doing so that our parents could understand how students feel while they are learning a foreign language and empathize with them.
